VIDEO: Maxi Araújo scores brace and Zalazar nets in Uruguay's thrashing of India
Sporting players took centre stage in the 6-1 Uruguayan victory
Uruguay thrashed India 6-1 in a friendly match in which Sporting players Maxi Araújo and Zalazar started and played prominent roles.
The match began at a high tempo, with former Benfica forward Darwin Núñez opening the scoring in the 12th minute from the penalty spot after sending the Indian goalkeeper the wrong way.
Almost immediately, Uruguay came close to a second. Zalazar received the ball and set up Maxi Araújo, whose first-time effort struck the woodwork. India, however, capitalised on an incomplete save by the Uruguayan goalkeeper to equalise in the 23rd minute through Thapa.
Shortly afterwards, a thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rain forced the match to be suspended.
Upon the restart, Uruguay regained control and Maxi Araújo was once again at the centre of attention. In the 28th minute, the winger popped up in the heart of the penalty area to finish off a fine team move and restore the South American side's lead.
In the second half, it was Zalazar's turn to make his mark. The Sporting midfielder received the ball in space on the edge of the box and, in the 53rd minute, drove a low shot home to make it 3-1. Six minutes later, Maxi Araújo struck again: shaking off his markers between the centre-backs, he broke into the area and beat the goalkeeper with a low finish to seal his brace.
